BMW M6 was developed by motor sport department of the German manufacturer BMW. It was a high-performance car, which was a version of 6-series automobile.

BMW M6 consists of mainly two generations. The first generation BMW M6 models were produced for seven years from 1983-1989. The platform used in this generation was BMW E24.

The automobile got a new set of E24 M635 CSi engine in the next generation. It had 3.5 L I6 286 PS power, along with catalyst version of 256 hp. The transmissions used in the vehicle were 5-speed manual system, equipped with a wheelbase of 103.1 inches. The length of the vehicle was about 187.2 inches in most of the models, sold all over the world, but in USA, it was 193.8 inches. The width of the model was 67.9 inches, while the height was 53.3 inches.

In 1983, BMW had rebuilt a modified version of M 88/1 taken from BMW M1 by using E 24 chassis and M 88/3 engine called as M635CSi. It was also known as M 6 in the North American market. For its quick performance, elegant, shark-nose style, and well luxury features, it has been welcomed throughout its lifetime.

The M1 model has badges on the grille, subtle brakes and a larger air dam features distinguishing M6 from the E24 models. In US, M6 was equipped with the catalyzed S38 motor, which had 256 hp of power and torque of 329 N-m. In the European and American versions, M6 could achieve a speed of 0-60 mph on 6.4 -6.8 seconds respectively. In July 1987, Car and Driver Magazine had tested M 6 and discovered that M 6 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. With sales of 5,885 M 6 model cars, the production work ended in 1989. Out of these, 1,767 were sold out within North America.

The second generation model BMW M6 hit in the market in the year 2005, at the Geneva Motor Show and is still under production. It is a part of BMW E 63/E 64 6-Series that was introduced in 2004. It has the same 5.0 L V10 S85 engine and SMG III gearbox that was of the E 60 M5. To make it more spacious, the acceleration power had been increased. Now, it can accelerate from 0 -100 km/hr in 4.3 seconds and comes with a top speed of 250 km/hr. It has the weight of 1,710 kg attached with a carbon fibre reinforced roof panel and thermoplastic front wings. In future, a CSL version of M6 is expected to be developed with light weight.
