Many people think that writing a love poem is one of the most challenging things to do. However, everybody should give it a try and with the following tips it's not as hard as it may seem at first.
The good thing about love poems is that you don't have to write page after page to make a lasting impression. Poems should be concise, so it is important to condense your thoughts into few words. Choose words that reflect your feelings and emotions as precisely as possible and use expressions that are strong and powerful.
Apart from the fact that your love poem should be correct in terms of grammar and spelling - unless you wish to play around with that - you are free to write about what and in whatever way you like. If you have difficulty with rhyme and meter you can just use free verse. There is also no limit when it comes to how long or short your poem or the lines in your love poem should be. Be creative and don't try to force yourself to stick to conventions.
When it comes to themes, love poems are obviously about love. However, this does not mean that you have to imitate a Shakespeare sonnet and write 14 lines about your beloved's most handsome features. Write about how you met your partner, or how you dream about them when you're apart. Of course you can also write a love poem about how somebody broke your heart in order to cope with your feelings and the situation you're in. Feel free to use poetry as a therapy; many famous poets did so before you.
If you are unsure about what to write about or which words to use, try to read other poets' works and be inspired by their ideas and use of language. You might find that you like the works of one poet better than those of another, so why not try to write a more modern version of your favourite poems about love by Shelley, Keats or Shakespeare? You could use words that are more modern and try to fit them into the original form of rhyme and metre.
Don't be afraid to start writing love poems; everybody has to start out somewhere. It is quite probable that the greatest poets of our time have felt what you are feeling and even they have started on a shoestring.
