A breast pump can be a valuable tool for many reasons. The first is that it can make breast feeding easier on both the mother and the baby. For example, if a baby is too weak to extract the milk from a breast on its own, a breast pump can ensure that the baby still gets to drink the nutritious milk. Or, if a mother has very sensitive skin which makes breast feeding is an extremely painful process, she can avoid a lot of chaffing and irritation by using a breast pump to harvest her milk.
A breast pump can also save new mothers a lot of time. A newborn might demand milk as many as eight times a day. If you don't want to spend every other waking hour breast feeding, you can pump milk ahead of time and feed it to the baby when they need it. If you invest in a breast pump bras, you can even pump hands-free; allowing you to work on the computer, clean, and talk on the phone while pumping.
With breast milk in a bottle, the responsibility of feeding the baby can also be shared between more family members. This helps the mother recover and it gives other family members additional opportunities to bond with the newcomer.
Even though there are dozens of breast pumps on the market, they all fall into one of three categories: manual, battery, and electric. The breast pump you decide to buy will probably depend on both your needs and your budget. For example, the manual breast pumps are the most affordable models, but they are also designed for minimal amounts of use. Electric breast pumps, on the other hand, can cost anywhere from $150 to $300 but they are designed for frequent and lengthy use. If you have twins, I would definitely recommend an electric one, but a battery operated model would probably suit the needs of most mothers. They can cost anywhere from $75 to $250.
If you aren't sure which model you want to buy, try to find some neighbors, friends, or family members with different brands that you can try. This is completely safe because many breast pumps can be thrown into the dishwasher and cleaned thoroughly.
Breast milk is the best food you can give your baby because it is easier to digest and more nutritious than powdered formulas. It does take time to breastfeed, but you can make the process much easier and efficient by buying your own breast pump. |
