The Koi come in a wide array of colors and patterns. The black species are distinguished from the other varieties due to their coloring and pattern, and not much else. They can grow up to about 36 inches in length, that is why there's also a need for them to be kept in large ponds like all of the other fish. It has the same lifespan as the others, around 25 to 35 years of age. They are seen regularly in outdoor ponds anywhere in the globe.

Types:

There are also various species for this kind of fish. First is the Magoi, the species which is one of the first all black mutations that can grow in really great lengths. They may look black when viewed from above, but in reality their color is actually deep bronze. Due to their great possibilities in terms of size, their blood is being reintroduced to other species in order to speed up and maximize the growth potential of the others.

The Karasu (which means "crow" in Japanese) is another of those extremely old species. It is characterized by its black body and black fins. They can also have an orange or a white belly.

The Matsukawabake has areas or white on its body. This one has the ability to change color. Due to environmental effects and their diet, their color changes from a duller or brighter shade of color. The temperature of the seasons or water can change the color of this fish completely, wherein they can turn completely white or completely black. It will return to its original color and pattern once there's a change in condition.

The Kumonryu is considered as the most popular of the species. It first debuted in the 1980's. "Kumonryu" means "dragon fish" in Japanese. It has been called as such because its body is reminiscent of the bodies of dragons represented in ancient paintings. Some people think that these fish look like dragons that are rising up through the sky's white clouds. It also has the ability to change its color and pattern.

The wide array of colors of this species is one of the factors that makes them an attraction to people. What's even more exciting is that you have the ability to own a fish that can amazingly change its color in an instant just like some of the species of the black Koi can!
