If you have ever really paid any attention to the surfaces we walk on, we would probably realize that much of what our feet come in contact with is stone. All kinds of stone surfaces are used with the specific purpose in mind for us to walk on. Dating back for thousands of years we have used stones for floors and walkways inside and outside. Our first paved roadways were made using natural stones.
Even though we have many materials such as concrete or asphalt that we use to make our roadways, sidewalks, driveways, and steps, we still have a need to use natural stone, not only because of its durability, but for its beauty as well. It gives a much more decorative to the look of the outside of our houses.
It might be a safe bet to say that the days of the ugly grey concrete patio and walkways are gone. When you can get the really great look that natural stone provides in all its many styles and colors, who would want concrete? The earth tones are the most popular for patios, steps and walkways, but that does not mean they are the only color choices.
People love the look of travertine, sandstone, and limestone for their outdoor projects. They blend so well into the landscape and look completely at home. They might choose to use these stones in tile form or they can be laid using slabs or small pieces of varied shapes. They have an ideal look for outdoor spaces.
Before the resurgence of natural stone that has occurred lately, swimming pool surrounds were almost always done with concrete. Now people are either using tiles or slabs or just using rocks that you would find surrounding streams, rivers, or near the ocean. Creating an oasis around the pool area that is as natural looking as possible is all the rage right now. They can even come complete with a waterfall.
For outdoor gardens and home entrance walkways, many will use the stone in tile forms. They create beautiful paths to follow. Many times the steps leading to a door will be done using the same stones and the porch that may be there as well. We all want our homes to be as beautiful on the outside as they are in the inside, and people have used stone for exactly this for as long as any of us can remember.
