There has always been something very appealing about a quaint country styled cottage. They have been around for hundreds of years in many different places all over the world. They began their popularity in Europe many centuries ago. They were small dwellings that were made comfortable for families to live in who could not afford to live in a grand manor house or an even grander castle.

The one thing that these small cottages had in common with the larger homes of that era were what they were made of. Though many times they could be made from wooden timbers, those that wanted their homes to last for as many years as possible made them using natural stones. The outside structure was made with whatever stones were available in the area.

The walkways, well surrounds, and outside fencing walls were usually constructed using the same stones. The roofs were often covered with slate tiles if they could be obtained. When all this stone work was combined with a lush green countryside, it displayed a harmonious look with nature.

People who buy small houses still try to give them the cozy cottage look today. There is hardly any style of home that is more charming. One of the easiest ways to achieve this look is to use the same materials that they used to out of necessity. While we can cover the outsides of our homes with vinyl siding, it is not nearly as attractive as stone. People sometimes choose wood or vinyl siding because it can be done in so many different colors. There is probably more stone color variety than some realize.

If you want to add the most value possible to a cottage type home, using real stone for the outer shell is best, but it is expensive today. Many of those who want to achieve this look a little less expensively will use faux stone siding. It does look great, but will not make your home appraisal as valuable as authentic stone. Installing faux stone is also less expensive.

If you are not prepared or had rather not redo the entire outside of your home, then adding smaller touches of natural stone can give a cottage feel too. Adding stone walkways, fencing, or even making a stone encasement for you mailbox will work. These smaller projects are also some that you can even do less expensively by doing them your self.
