Valentine's Day, also known as Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated every year on the 14th February no matter what day it falls on and dates back to the time of the Roman Empire. Lovers all over the world celebrate this romantic event.

There are many tales associated with the origin of Valentine's Day, one of which being it originated from St Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for not wanting to give up his Christianity.

St Valentine died on the 14th February, 269 AD - the same day that is now recognised as the day of love. According to legend, he left a goodbye note for the jailer's daughter with whom he'd become very good friends with signing it 'From Your Valentine'.

Valentine's Day is considered the most romantic day of the year. It is the day when boyfriends and girlfriends, husbands and wives come together to express and celebrate the love they share. The main tradition of Valentine's Day is sending Valentine's Day cards and romantic gifts.

Many people celebrate with a meal out at a fancy restaurant or a romantic trip away for a couple of days, profits for raunchy underwear and red roses also rocket at and around this time. Each year, people in Britain spend around 503 million pounds on Valentines cards and gifts.

Valentine's Day is a day when confidence seems to grow and people find the courage within to tell that special someone they like them. Sending a Valentines card to someone you have had your eye on for weeks, months or even years is a great way to get things started.

There are several genres of Valentine's cards; from the traditional soppy type featuring red roses and hearts to the ones with crude captions appealing to the adult sense of humour, over the years humour is becoming more and more popular.

The nation appears to be divided on Valentine's Day with some people wanting smutty humour cards and others looking for the more traditional cards with lengthy and meaningful verses.

There are many traditions, tales and myths associated with Valentine's Day. One being that the first man an unmarried woman saw on the 14th February would be the man she would marry.

Another was if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day it meant she would marry a sailor. If she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man but be very happy and if she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a rich person.

People have been sending Valentine's Day cards for hundreds of years, it is one of the biggest events of the year on the greetings card calendar with the majority of people sending more than one.

In recent years with the development of the internet, internet greeting card companies have seen massive surges in card sales on Valentine's Day.

The appeal being cards can be personalised; either printed or handwritten and sent direct to the recipient, this can be completely anonymous or signed with your name.

Anonymity plays a major part in Valentine's Day with some people being too shy to confess and others just wanting to keep the fun alive.
