There are many arguments for and against the uses of essential oils, especially if they are used for healing minor ailments and provide health benefits if used as a scent. Many will argue that there is no true scientific evidence that each natural oil has a potent healing property to them when used for healing and improving ones health. This is something which to this day has much debate over and is increasingly studied upon to see whether this has any bearings.

The essential oils market has been strong since its first uses of ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece. The oils in Ancient Egypt were used cosmetically rather than for its health benefits. These were of keeping the body fragrant and the home smelling fresh. The Greeks discovered that some of the herbs and plants in which the oils were extracted from had some interesting positive effects on people's health, healing minor illness and relieving pain from small wounds.

Hippocrates was one of the first to instigate cleanliness and use of herbs for ridding illnesses and treating common ailments. He discovered that burning the herbs gave out a certain fragrances which appeared to relieve some of the minor problems people may develop. Some of the plant extracts such as eucalyptus, lavender and peppermint are still in wide usage for helping with colds, flues, stomach pains and digestive instabilities.

Essential oils in our modern day are now diluted heavily. Some of the lesser affective oils tend to be diluted with vegetable oil, which makes the substance less potent and reduces its healing quality. Good quality ones are ones which are kept in its natural state, have not been modified and can be purchased from health retail shops as opposed to being available from high street brands. Oils which only need one or two drops for the full beneficial affects to be appreciated tend to be the ones that are of good quality and standard.

With this in mind it is important to know the difference between organic and non organic essential oils as some may confuse this as diluted and non-diluted oils. Put simply organic essential oils are extracted from plants which have not been treated with pesticides, herbicides and any other form of chemical treatment. Non-organic essential oil however, may cause allergic reactions because of the level of chemicals present in the solution. These tend to be less expensive unlike organic oils which are more expensive and rarely have allergic reactions from continued use.

In essence some essential oils are possibly not as effective as they should due to the dilution process, whereas using organic and non diluted oils will have the benefits needed and expected. This however, may not convince others who believe that effects are placebo. Nonetheless it is certainly something one would need to look into, researching the facts about specific herbs and plants, their healing properties of benefits for specific ailments, and the minimum amount of usage. Without prior knowledge the effects, the results will not be fully appreciated.
