This year to make your grandparent's day that bit more incredible, try sending them both, or just one of them a free e-card. Free e-cards are rapidly overtaking paper cards in popularity. There are a few main reasons for this.
First of, the one that probably is most important is the fact that they are free e-cards, lets face it everybody would rather use the free option.
Secondly, free e-cards are very eco friendly, unlike their paper counterparts. Free e-cards are not made of paper, so no trees ever need to be felled to make them. This also helps with global warming for a few reasons, the main being more carbon dioxide is being converted to oxygen. As long as you and your recipient are connected to the web you are both set to go. In spite of its understandable commercial appeal , this holiday's humble beginning dates back to its first observance in West Virginia on May 27, 1973. The source of the idea and its chief advocate was a housewife from West Virginia named Marian McQuade, a woman who remained involved in helping the elderly in her community and bringing about recognition of their needs all while raising her own 15 children.
Thanks to her tireless efforts, the Sunday after Labor Day was given unanimous Congressional approval and signed into existence as National Grandparents Day by President Jimmy Carter. The holiday was celebrated across the United States for the first time in 1979.
The day's main goals are stated as "honor[ing] grandparents, give[ing] grandparents the opportunity to show love for their children's children, and help[ing] children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer."
Visiting with grandparents or other older relatives, especially nursing home patients, or bringing your children to visit theirs are wonderful ways for the young and old to socialize and form bonds. In addition to that, Mrs. McQuade has suggested doing anything from cooking, knitting or quilting, to dances and sing-alongs.
Family dinners or reunions to specifically commemorate the elder generations are also great activities to celebrate the occasion, not to mention the compilation of a family tree or poring over dusty photograph albums full of snapshots of someone in the bathtub surrounded by a fleet of rubber duckies.
