Because Jesus was a known advocate against the Roman regime, he was welcomed into the city by throngs of people. However, the climax of his persecution and notoriety also began with his return to the city. Palm Sunday honors his ultimate sacrifice as a day of solemnity and obligation.
Palm Sunday is commemorated by formal church service, with little decorum. The Passion of Christ, an excerpt of the Gospel of Matthew that relates what happened after Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem, is read for the congregation.
A formal benediction of the palm is recited, reinforcing it as a symbol of triumph. It is customary to use not only palm fronds, which can be difficult to find in many parts of the world, but also green boughs, leaves, and flowers.
The flowers and branches intertwined among the ceremonial palm fronds are also blessed. These traditional arrangements are brought out of churches and into public centers in religious communities around the world by way of simultaneously festive and dignified processions, which include modest ornamentation using flowers and candles.
The plant arrangements used in Palm Sunday rituals are then burned to produce the ashes for the start of the following Lent season, Ash Wednesday.
